I am unable to get an image of the error message to upload below. It begins "An error occurred during a connection to files: constantcontact.com:443: or on a different message "An error occurred during a connection to files: imgssl.constantcontact.com:443". Several months ago I started to get these error messages and now they are on about 5% of total messages, from a half dozen or so senders, businesses who send frequent messages. I have to click "OK" anywhere up to twenty times before the error message goes away and I can read the message without the images which are now blank boxes. I read the recent question and answer from the user with the same problem with his newsgroup messages, which suggested the problem was an incorrectly configured server, but which server? Is it my ISP EarthLink's server, the sender's server, or something else? I use POP and so can open normally and see all images for these messages on the earthlink.net website. Is it possible my use of an obsolete version of Thunderbird has something to do with this problem? I still use v.3.1.20. Computer is an Acer AX-1430 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

QUite probably caused y using an ald version of Thunderbird. there have been lots of changes in SSL/TLs since it came out. SSL is totally obsolete that TLS has gone through a couple of point updates. How about updating to the current version.

Matt, thanks for the reply. I am now looking into installing an updated version but see some problems and will probably need to start a new thread by asking another question.

is there something wrong with continuing this discussion?

Hi, Matt. Nothing wrong. As I understand it, the error message problem cannot be rectified in my current obsolete version so I have to update. My concern is with losing access to my message files which are in the old format of all Inbox messages in a single huge file, all Sent messages in another very large file, etc., rather than the later format of each message in its own individual file.

Mail storage has not changed... there is an experimental file per email that has been around for many years, but it is still to buggy for general release. Details here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/maildir-thunderbird

However to assuage any forebodings and as good practice anyway, backup your profile.

Make sure Thunderbird is not running then; Windows Key +R Type %appdata% press enter. Copy the shown Thunderbird folder to a backup device.

Matt, Starting with the link you provided, I have been slowly educating myself about the workings of email and some of the terminology, like MBOX vs. Maildir. I found from Help>Check for Updates that my obsolete v. 3.1.20 cannot be updated directly, I must download and install manually the new version. In the past, first for a new computer and again for a replacement hard drive, I downloaded and installed manually a new copy of the same old version. At some point in the install, I did something wrong and had to start over more than once. At the end of the install, a new profile had been created. Then I went through much trial and error to copy the old profile data into the new profile. I fear similar problems at a minimum on an upgrade now. When I did the re-installs, I was unaware of the Profile Manager program. Could it have been used?

Yes, you tell it to create a new profile and point it to the location the "lost" profile occupies and it reestablished the link.

Matt, again many thanks. Another concern is a folder I have with the old program, \AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\(same 8 char).default - CACHE, 268 items, two quite large. I don't know what it is for. Do I have to do anything with it when I switch to the new version? Are there tips on how to get POP rather than IMAP when installing the new program?

delete the locals, it contains a cache of old mail and images similar the the browser cache of things fetched from the web.

If you copy your profile, using the "remote/Thunderbird folder as a root you will not have to select anything to get pop or IMAP, all your accounts will already be set up.

If you wish to change from POP to IMAP you must recreate the account in Thunderbird using the protocol you want. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/faq-changing-imap-pop
