write about:profiles in the Firefox address bar and select Open Folder in correspondence of the "Root Directory" of the user profile you want to customize;

create a new folder named "chrome";

create a new file named userContent.css inside the chrome folder and put the following code in it:

   @-moz-document url("about:newtab") {
       body {
           background-color: #000000 !important;
       }
   }

note: that all zeroes is a html color code. so just google for the values corresponding to the color you want.

Hi, you can only do that with userContent.css

/*CHANGE NEW TAB BACKGROUND COLOUR*/
@-moz-document url("about:newtab"), url("about:home") {
 body { background-color: #e7d74b !important;}
}

You can replace #e7d74b with any colour you like from https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_colors.asp

Note that this goes into a userContent.css file, not userChrome.

If you don't know how to use CSS, see https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html

Depending on how you use the New Tab, you can alternatively use an extension such as https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quick-dial/
