Unable to sign in to server from Thunderbird, however I can sign in direct on the server
I have been using Thunderbird for few months, and it has been good. However this morning I signed into Thunderbird to be told "unable to log onto server, server error" I thought I've been hacked again, so I accessed the BT webmail server with my current password and I get to my emails. I went back into Thunderbird and put in my password again with the same result. I had a similar problem with Windows Live Mail, which is why I switched to Thunderbird. Any ideas please?

Something you need to know before you start.
The ability to access web mail means exactly nothing more than you know your password and user name to do so. Even that is only relevant where the mail server and the web server use the same username and password.
Have you considered stopping your anti virus from scanning mail? That by itself is probably the number one cause of mail suddenly stopping. Out by itself by a margin of probably 20 to 1.
