You have promised to send an email re new password- NOT rec'd!!!
I am endeavouring to download the new version of Thunderbird, and I am required to provide my emai address, and username. As far as I am aware I have never provided a username, and I have been using Thunderbird for years.......I therefore said that I had forgotten my username, and requested a "new" one. I was promised an email enclosing this information, but it did not arrive. Nor has there been any new emails since that time.

Have you been asked to give e-mail and username before downloading a new version of Thunderbird? I'm pretty sure that we don't demand it on this stage.

It wants your email username and password. Thunderbird has nothing to do with that. There is no place in Thunderbird to even request that info to be sent. Contact your email provider for your email username and password.
