Mouse pointer moves on it's own...hard to control.

There are times when my mouse pointer acts as if someone else is controlling it...and they are trying to drive me crazy! It will start 'jumping' up and down quickly and I cannot control it. It may jump around the screen but the main thing it does, it seems, is try to keep me from being able to use it.

I have learned with practice that if I use both hands (on mouse) and can "catch" it and hold it with one hand (finger), I am then able (with much effort and frustration) to use the other hand (finger) to guide the pointer and shut down the computer. What is going on? I will say, I am a night owl and this usually happens at night after I have been on the computer for a good while and/or sometimes when I take a break and leave the computer on with a page or two open. Very frustrating. Hope you can help me! Thanks!

I had a problem with the cursor until I disabled the touchpad.

Check that your mouse programs are up to date.

Is the problem just with Firefox? What about other programs?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Are you using a wireless mouse or one connected via a cable?

You can try a different mouse in case there is a (hardware) problem or the mouse may require some cleaning.

Previous question: Problem with mouse pointer jumping up and down very quickly as if controlled by someone high on caffeine and jittery wanting to drive me crazy :)...I have no control over it. It will move side to side and leave the screen even...just have to be patient and try to 'catch it' when it reappears. The original question concerning this problem failed to mention that I use a Lenova ThinkPad laptop computer with a touchpad mouse. Thank you for the 2 replies I have received...would the recommendation still apply? Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I'll try starting in safe mode all the time.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options/Preferences -> General -> Performance)
  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no lightweight theme)
  • default toolbar layout is used
  • xulstore.json is ignored
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder in profile folder)
  • JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected
