Why can't I connect to my RBS bank any more? https://www.rbsdigital.com/

more options

The site is from a major bank in the UK, so the idea that it is duff is rather far-fetched. It worked fine until I installed Firefox ESR 60.0.2. It has a valid certificate "Verified by: Digicert Inc.". What really irks me is that I DO KNOW BETTER than the blocking software, and some arrogant idiot has set up code that is preventing me from posting it as an exception until you get the Firefox problem fixed. And NO, it is not anything to do with antivirus or malware, as I have not changed any of these things, and have run checks often.

Try testing that website BEFORE you give any kiss-off answer!

And especially, DON'T BLOCK stuff unconditionally: the user should always be allowed to override that.

Chosen solution

I tried the "Troubleshoot ... " shortcut, and one of the suggestions was to refresh Firefox, which I tried. THAT WORKED! Many thanks. Now all that's needed is for the developers to put that shortcut on the error page.

Did you install a fresh version of Firefox or did you upgrade?

more options

Upgrade, same as I've done since ESR v35 (I think). Never run into this issue before. I got the certificate from Internet Explorer (attached). DID YOU TRY THE WEB SITE https://www.rbsdigital.com ? TRY IT YOURSELF, and see whether it comes up properly. If not, then there is a problem with the certificate validation in 60.0.2.

It works fine in Firefox 52.0 Here is the website with previous versions of Firefox. https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ . Scroll down and click on the 52.0 and select the download. Install the 52.0 and see if that works.

Hello. Hello. Hello. Obviously you DIDN'T READ what I already sent.

I have been using Firefox ESR for ages, and had NO PROBLEM with this site UNTIL I installed 60.0.2. This means that I have used it with ALL VERSIONS prior to that. I upgraded pretty much with each major release.

HAVE YOU TRIED THE WEB SITE with 60.0.2? Having worked in software development for four decades, this seems to me to be an obvious starting point! Asking me to revert to a previous version that I have already stated worked OK is pointless. https://www.rbsdigital.com

I went, tested it on Firefox Quantum 60.0.2 and it works. So I don't know what the problem is.

I am running WIndows 10 Pro (x64) build 16299, using the 32-bit version of Firefox ESR.

I can load the page in Firefox 60, but immediately it shows a cookie check page asking for account information, so I didn't get very far.

Which error message do you get?

Secure Connection Failed The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem.

There is no "Troubleshoot ... " message, just what's above. Note especially, it worked fine on the previous iteration of Firefox ESR, and still works fine on Internet Explorer.

It shows the green padlock in 60.0.2, and "Verifiedby: Digicert Inc" when I rollover with the pointer. It looks like it didn't follow the certificate chain.

This seems like a fairly major issue. And the fact that it's fixable by refreshing firefox (whatever that means, the version number stays 60.0.2) implies it's mozilla's issue not rbs's.

To clarify for others: Menu-->Help-->Troubleshooting Information-->Refresh Firefox-->Finish-->Reopen tabs etc

What Refresh is about: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-preferences-fix-problems

why should the Firefox version change?

Version changes when there are modifications to the program. A refresh gets rid of any extra junk accumulated since installation.

Yes, thanks for info. The main things is that other RBS users find this thread and figure out what to do. RBS claims to have 30 million customers so that's potentially quite a few Firefox users who decide to switch to Chrome because of an unhelpful blocking message and an obscurely located and named button.

I understand that the source of the problem is almost certainly RBS but it's a lot easier to switch browser than bank (they would dearly like us all to stick to IE6, and I know from a recent visit that the PCs are still running XP).

The solution is trivially easy once you know what Refreshing means and the kind of thing it might help.

Nope.

The Refresh is not some method of dusting or spring cleaning of the Firefox program. It is basically a awkward way of creating a new Profile for Firefox (and putting your important settings in a folder on desktop) instead of using the ProfileManager to create a new Profile.

The version of Firefox changes when there is a new major Release or a minor update for security and or stability fixes. A Refresh does does not change the Firefox version nor does it affect the Firefox program folder whether on Windows, Mac OSX , or Linux.

The Profiles is separate from the Firefox folder whether on Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

My question was why should the Firefox version change after a Refresh as what should be the new version then as it would only complicate things.

The problem is Firefox. Both in incorrect handling of the certificate for some reason (which the refresh fixed), and in actually BLOCKING, rather than giving the user a CHOICE. Do you honestly think that a multi-billion pound organisation would risk their customers by having a dodgy certificate? Really?

Hi Paul8ain, Firefox verifies secure connections (connections to HTTPS addresses) so you can trust that you are connecting to the site you want to visit and not an interloper. Sometimes the site has made a mistake (such as lettings its certificate expire or not installing all of the necessary files), sometimes there is an issue with your security software, and sometimes users find malware or some other diversion is at fault. Unfortunately, Firefox often cannot determine the reason, which is why humans need to study the situation.

The Refresh feature removes several settings/data files, including customized preferences and the file(s) that stores accumulated certificates (cert9.db and previously cert8.db). That helped in this case, but for better or worse, we didn't spend enough time digging into the source of the problem to get a definitive diagnosis of why the problem occurred with your previous settings/data.
