After years of using Firefox suddenly I can no longer save pictures from internet sites. When I try to save one I get an error message as shown in Extension 1. What the heck is this and what's going on? I like whatever was added that allows me to capture and save video clips. But what is this software that is interfering with the simple matter of saving photographs, usually jpg/jpeg files and the like? I don't understand half the questions asked. Moreover if I try to do something I then get a page (Extension 2 GitHub that seems to charge me for doing what Windows 7 and other iterations of Windows has long done free. What is GitHub? As far as I am concerned, my answer to GitHub is Git Lost!

HI, Github is a repository of code, programs and knowledge. Need to google your questions with github in the search words so that you land on the page/s you may want with out paying.

The 1st picture above is to download a download manager. Is this happening on all sites you want to download a picture from or just the 1 site. If it is 1 site then they have coded a right click in that so you can not click to get the picture but refers you to the download manager for a money for the referral, I would think.

If this happens on every site please do this : use more than 1 scanner as each uses diff tech :

Save your Report and google each before deleting anything as do not want to delete something you need, If need help :

Post in only 1 forum, then wait.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thanks! I have this problem--the intervention of some unnamed download manager--in FF only. I can handily download and save pictures using Internet Explorer without any intervening software and without any download manager. Just right-click and select Save picture. This was true for FF until very recently. I try to avoid potential security risks, like downloading unknown software--like this unnamed download manager, especially to solve a problem I didn't know I had. Is it a Mozilla product? Any idea why I need it in FF?

Sounds like I don't need GitHub. I am not sure what you mean by "use more than 1 scanner". Do you mean my HP scanner and/or Adobe Acrobat? They're fine for saving printed images in a digital form. For saving some whole webpages combining test with occasional photos. Not sure what my scanner (I have just one) or Acrobat Pro software have to do with saving a digital picture to a folder on my hard drive.

Basically you should know what’s installed on your system, including add-ons for Firefox.

The screenshot looks like an unfinished install of the Free Download Manager (FDM) add-on, which apparently has some bad reviews at this point - it does not seem to work as it should.

Open your Add-ons menu (Tools menu OR menu button > Add-ons) and remove it, then restart Firefox just in case. Is the problem still there?

As for "scanning", Pkshadow referred to malware scanners.

Many thanks! Particularly for explaining that what I am seeing is related to the Free Download Manager. (Gee, that name sounds so generic that it sounds suspicious! That's why I called it "unnamed!"). And how to get rid of it! Actually, the FDLM has worked reasonably well for me downloading occasional video clips. Occasionally it apparently does not recognize one that I am playing. One drawback is that it tends to load up (in its download list) practically every video clip on a webpage, even ones I have not actually run! Since it is nearly impossible to figure out whether the one I want is in that list the result is way too many get downloaded and then I have to delete the many many unwanted ones.

I inactivated the Free Download Manager and restarted FF around 7:45 this morning. After about 15 minutes of watching a message telling me that "your updates to FF" (my updates?) will take only a few moments I left for breakfast. Apparently those updates have been installed--the message is gone. Now it seems FF cannot connect to any websites. Every attempt to open a site, such as Google.com, is eventually answered with the message "The connection has timed out." ("The server at Google.com is taking too long to respond") Tried cnbc.com with the same result ("The server at cnbc.com is taking too long to respond"). Same result for www.msnbc.com. Meanwhile I can handily access the internet on my computer using Internet Explorer. Should I just delete FF and reinstall it?

I like to point out there is two version of FDM v3 and v5 so making a misleading claim is not a wise choice of words. I use FDM v3 and it works fine with FF59.0.3x64 without problem. FDM v5 on the other hand is not customizable version and that has own its own share of compliants. But that doesn't equal to bad reviews so before we make those kinda claims we should not make unconscious bias on all the versions.

@WestEnd: I did not make any claims, but just wrote it has some bad AMO reviews ever since Quantum releases exist, so that apparently applies to v5 as you confirmed. I did not mention the requirement of installing FDM itself, but the question owner reported "some unwanted add-on" so it’s not bad to name these issues in order to prevent anyone from advising to perform a full install. Finding out about different versions and how add-ons perform is not my task, downloading the add-on to check its contents (to verify the screenshot) should be enough, so I limit my feedback to the issue of the question owner. Please do not attack me on that feedback publically just because you have some positive results with any of its versions. My intentions are not to blame add-ons or to disadvise them, reminding users of existing issues however (or rather: summarizing what they see when they click the reviews link) should not be that bad.

@mcguirejw: were you able to save as usual right after restarting Firefox?

From your words ("telling me that "your updates to FF" (my updates?) will take only a few moments") I get the feeling you may have downloaded some unofficial or fake update aka malware, so you may have ended up with a separate issue affecting connectivity, as those words should not appear - downloads should happen on the background when enabled, or you should get an official update prompt from Windows asking for input. However I may be wrong. Nevertheless, check your system for malware using 2 or more tools described in the linked article.

You can also choose to perform a Refresh of Firefox, or create a new profile. The latter is always a quick method of finding any profile-related issues, and you can switch back / choose the original profile afterwards. Running a malware scan is advised nevertheless.

Finally got FF connectivity and it now works as usual. Deleting/inactivating those add-ons seemed to do the trick. Many thanks to all!

Welcome. Please mark this as solved with the solution that worked so others can find it. Thanks.

Disabling which add-on(s) solved it? Side note: starting Firefox in Safe Mode or manually disabling add-ons one by one is basically step 1 in case of issues, and often overlooked or therefore not mentioned in the forum.

Remember that your original issue was about FDM only. It’s odd to see another add-on caused the connectivity issue after disabling that, unless it occurred with FDM enabled too, or you installed multiple add-ons in a row. Another possibility is - in rare cases - a disabled add-on is still able to cause issues. For that reason I always uninstall suspicious ones when issues do not disappear in Safe mode or with add-ons manually disabled.
