Firefox slows down my computer and strains my cpu, what can I do?

more options

Since lately when opening Firefox my mouse starts to lag, Firefox is terribly slow, the CPU workload rises sharply and the fan works like crazy. OS is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, CPU Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU B950 @ 2.10GHz, 2 cores, 4 GB RAM.

This started out of nowhere, I did not change anything about the browser, had no addons installed whatsoever, in the meantime I installed disconnect and ublock, but that did not affect the issues at all. I already tried a lot of things to fix this, disabled accessability, used the refresh firefox feature, started it in safe mode, I uninstalled Firefox including the complete mozilla folder from the appdata folder and reinstalled, deleted the content-prefs.sqlite file, nothing helped.

What does help is this, when I start Firefox and the problems appear, I open the task manager got to processes and there I find about 6-8 firefox.exe processes, I end the one or two that strain my cpu the most and after that the problems mostly disappear.

If anyone has an idea how to fix this, thanks in advance.

hi, could you capture and share a performance profile while this is happening once? https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Reporting_a_Performance_Problem

I wasn't able to properly reproduce the problem as I experienced it before, butI hope you can still find some traces of the phenomenon in this. It is weird, I changed nothing but suddenly the problem is less severe than before. Still, while I used the diagnose tool the lagging of my mouse cursor intensified again and the fan turned up. As I am writing this my mouse has repeated episodes of severe lagging.

PS: The "fix" I described in the first post worked only temporarily, after several minutes the problems started to reappear.

thanks, nothing in particular is sticking out to me there - could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum (or if it's too long through a site like https://pastebin.mozilla.org/ and provide the link here)?

maybe this might hold further clues what is going on...

No idea so far, the problem is still around, it is just not as severe as it once was? Or am I on the wrong track, could it be something else but firefox that causes this?
