Since last week when I go to Outlook.com and click on one of my emails the email opens as expected. If i then go to click anywhere in the body of the email it immediately returns me to the inbox again. If I refresh the browser I can open ONE email and click in the body anywhere and its fine, if I then open any other email it reverts to taking me back to the inbox. This i shighly frustrating and woule lead me to go back to using chrome as accessing my email is one of the main uses of my browser now.

I have tried this in chrome nd cannot replicate.

In firefox I have cleared all cache, history, disabled add ons and it always takes me back to the inbox.

Chosen solution

Hi Paddylad, a team of developers worked on this over the weekend and developed a fix that will be in testing this week in the Nightly release, but it's not likely that Firefox 58 will get the update for 1-3 weeks.

These are all the workarounds I'm aware of (other than using zoom in the message to temporarily fix that one message, e.g., Ctrl+ or Ctrl-):

(1) Use the Reading pane

If you have a wide display, you could try using the Reading pane on the right side of the Inbox.

(2) Switch to the Outlook beta layout

There is a "Try the beta" switch above the Inbox. You'll be able to switch back equally easily if you don't like it.

(3) Revert to the older layout code for the site

This is the change cor-el mentioned.

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste stylo and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the layout.css.stylo-blocklist.enabled preference to switch the value from false to true

(D) Double-click the layout.css.stylo-blocklist.blocked_domains preference and set the value to live.com and click OK. (In the unlikely event that you already had one or more sites listed add ,live.com to the list.)

Then exit/quit Firefox and start it up again to make the change effective.

Hi Paddylad

There have been issues reported with Outlook (Hotmail).

  • [/questions/1201654#answer-1070457] When using my hotmailaccount in Firefox I have to reload the mailaccount constantly due to the pointer (hand) vanish and is replaced with the arrow!

A possible workaround that you can try is to modify these prefs on the about:config page:

  • layout.css.stylo-blocklist.enabled => true
  • layout.css.stylo-blocklist.blocked_domains => live.com

See comment 8 and comment 9:

  • bug 1433591#c8 - Links and text selection in Outlook messages broken, mouse action received by Inbox behind open message

Quantum 58.0.

This (the original question) sounds familiar to what I am experiencing, but I described mine differently,

This is my email from Outlook Support today: We are currently receiving reports related with the same issue as yours. It appears that this issue happens with Mozilla Firefox browser which has caused an issue with Outlook.com. Mozilla Firefox is a third party software which is completely not related with Microsoft. Our Engineers are working hand on hand with Mozilla Team to gather data and possibly come up a resolution soon.

I will try the Beta suggestion and read a bit more.

Thank you.

I applied this fix to my windows10 Acer laptop. It seems to work perfectly. I have a question - does FF58 have this same problem on OSX Sierra? I have been holding off on the update there just in case. If OSX has the same problem is the fix exactly the same as the one posted here?

Exactly the same -- as far as I know.

Should I just uninstall FF58 until they get around to fixing this?

Not only did this happen in this version of FF, the highlight-hit-enter-key to open an email stopped working also!!

I hate Chrome, don't make me go back to that. Ugh.

Update: I just entered the fixes in the about:config screen. Will I have to manually go back and reverse these when the fix for these issues is enacted? Or, will FF updates take care of this?

You do not need to remove the exception for live.com even after this bug is fixed. In the Firefox 60 time frame, the stylo blocklist is expected to be completely removed anyway.

THANK YOU.

The fixes WORKED. Sooo happy. Weird email behavior described above stopped, and my Highlight-Hit-Enter-to-Open-Email functionality works again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So happy because usually fixes don't work. Sigh. Happy. Happy.

Update: you must click the check box on the email, not just highlight it, in order to use the Enter key to open. Sigh. So close.

Note that Firefox 58.0.2 will be released with a fix for this. I see a candidate for 58.0.2, but I don't know if there needs to be another build since this patch only landed a few hours ago.

Hi, I applied the fixes for 58.0.1and they work perfectly. My machine installed 58.0.2 overnight and things still look good. Do I need to back out the changes that I applied to 58.0.1 or should I leave well enough alone? Thanks, Pete

Hi Pete, after you get Firefox 58.0.2 you can remove live.com from the blocklist if you like, but I don't think you would notice a difference either way. Firefox 60 is expected to remove the blocklist automatically.
