For a while, when I entered a search term in the search window, a new tab would open with the results instead of changing the existing tab. It no longer does that. I looked at the settings and didn't see anything. Is there any way this functionality could come back? I really like having a new tab open.

In about:config there is this pref that can be toggled to true, with a double-click on that preference.

browser.search.openintab

Problem is that it doesn't seem to work in the URL bar, only from the separate Search Bar which is hidden in the Customize palette with Firefox 57. The user needs to open the Customize feature and drag the Search Nat to the Navigation Toolbar. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-firefox-controls-buttons-and-toolbars

Did you change the General settings to open a new page? That could also be the problem.

In older versions of Firefox, there was no problem because search bar and URL bar were 2 differents things.

Nowadays, you need an extensions to do that.

The only one you'll need is: New Tab from Location Bar

Does the trick pretty well: Type anything on your current URL bar and search, it will just open another tab while keeping your current tab open.
