Is it okay to use a website without a secure connection when you don't have to enter a password or upload an image?

more options

Dear Firefox users

I was wondering if it is okay to use, browse, search on a website that has not got a secure connection? second question: when I was younger I used to use this website called 'www.Morphthing.com' to upload a picture of myself to morph with other faces, but it didn't/doesn't have a secure connection. I didn't have an account on the website, so I never had to fill in a password. But I was wondering if someone could see/steal my picture I uploaded. Not that it was uploading anything innapropriate or bad, I just wouldn't like the idea of someone eavesdropping. On the website it says: "all images uploaded are private unless you share it with someone." But I am worried that someone might have seen my images that I uploaded because of the insecure connection.

Thank you very much for your help and time.

Yes it is ok. If you were to use Chrome would give more away to google to harvest in 1 min than a week in Firefox.

When uploading pics if never read the terms of service of the site http://www.morphthing.com/privacy then would not know and most people do not read some tiny link at the bottom of the page.

Anything that travels in open is open to interception but is very hard to do with a picture as that consists of many, many packets being transferred as the pic is broke down to very small amount of bytes and would be hundreds to thousands of them. They would all have to be captured to remake the pic. If were to send a password/user name there would be more chance of interception. You still need to be targeted for that kind of thing so it is not to worry about.

Is more important that you log in and out of sites with protected HTTPS address.

Hi L.M., the difference between a secure (HTTPS) connection and an unsecured (HTTP) connection is what happens between Firefox and the web server.

With a secure connection, Firefox and the server agree to encrypt all of the communications between them so someone listening on the line cannot read what you send and receive.

With an unsecured connection, the data is sent in a form that is easily read if someone has access to the communications. If you are using a wired connection, fewer people are in a position to intercept your browsing than if you are on a wireless connection, particularly an open connection like you might find at a coffee shop (that would be a worst case scenario because all those people pretending to be working could be spying on one another and you).

When you consider high-profile breaches like celebrity photos on SnapChat a few years ago, I think you have to assume that anything you send to a web server is at some risk of leaking, but there's no point worrying about it now... what's done is done.
