I would hope we are talking about Firefox and not Win 10

More detail would be really helpful since you supply non and expected to figure out why this is happening. Is guessing with no information.

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.2 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

There was not room to fill in details before.

I have a NEW Win 10 computer....installed before delivery. I HATE Internet Explorer and want Firefox. I went to the web page to download the Firefox browser. It downloaded the EXE install file and the computer asked me how I wanted to open the file when I double clicked on the file name in the download folder. I selected Internet Explorer but didnt know why because I just wanted to RUN the damned file. This took me back to the download page and again downloaded the file and when I went to the file and double clicked on it, it AGAIN wanted to know how I wanted to open it.....Its an infinite cycle that never installs Firefox so "uninstalling FF as you suggest does NOT apply to my problem. I cant get it to install. I hate Widows. Never have this kind problem with Linix!!!!

Save the file. Do not use Microsoft Run. After saving the file Double click it to run the installer. I suggest using the Full Version Installer from here : https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ Not the Stub Installer you have been downloading.

Ok......no run, Save and double click it.

It is possible that security software (anti-virus, firewall) is causing the problem. Try to disable security software temporarily to see if that makes a difference.

If the 64-bit Firefox version gives problems then try the 32-bit Firefox version.

Try this:

I am thinking now that this is a Win 10 problem because I try it from the new site. And nothing changes. The installer file shows up in the download folder, as it should. But double clicking brings up a window that asks, "How do you want to open it?' and offers Internet explorer or several word processors. It doesnt offer to RUN the file.

Is this file an executable and has a .exe file extension?

Very strange indeed. You can try Right Click and Run as Administrator. It is something that malware can do is to block you from running things that can help fix it.

Useful to reset everything back to stock : http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

Scan with this and google everything. Keep Logs. https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/ If need help : https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/9573-im-infected-what-do-i-do-now/

Can use this also and say 1 time scan only : https://www.hitmanpro.com/en-us/hmp.aspx

Suggest use DISM may not fix what you want but will fix things.

Repair System Registry and Files

(FOR DOING Above & Below - WINDOWS All OTHER VERSIONS - Use Search To Find Command Prompt ** Enter CMD.exe to Find COMMAND PROMPT Then Right Click & RUN AS ADMIN)

To run the SFC command use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter. For more information on using SFC, please refer to the Microsoft KB: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Run the Windows Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) tools as Administrator. The DISM and SFC tools scan the integrity of the Windows image and all protected system files replaces corrupted, damaged and incorrect versions. (FOR DOING Above & Below - WINDOWS All OTHER VERSIONS - Use Search To Find Command Prompt ** Enter CMD.exe to Find COMMAND PROMPT Then Right Click & RUN AS ADMIN) Type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter.

Windows 10 To run the DISM command use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu, then select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter. Reboot After.

Note : SFC fixes files locally using files found on your system. Note : DISM goes up to Microsoft for new ones.

Reboot After.

Yes it is. But double clicking on it DOES NOT execute it but instead puts up a menu for me to select from to "open" it.

I also noted that when I close the website I am told that the "download" is not complete BUT aside from that note, there is NO indication that a download is in progress!!!

Please follow this to un-hide the download arrow. I think you just nailed the issue. The downloads are not completed so the files will never run. Delete them all.

You may also be more familiar with the top of the browser Menu if it is not turned on. Mouse to top of browser, Right Click in a empty spot and Click Menu Bar.

Also make sure your security software isn't interfering and corrupting the download.
