I've used quantum since the first day with no problems and noticed a big speed improvement that also showed some more ram usage. This recently I started having this issue where i'd be on for awhile, and I'd have maybe 3-5 tabs open and then everything slowed or stopped. Then I'd notice I was using 95-98% of my ram which of course would explain the hang. I started keeping 'about:memory' as an open tab to minimize usage it's gotten so bad. But when it gets near the top like that, it doesn't help much and takes a really long time to respond or I have to shut down my computer and restart.

I've got 4gb ram and am using win7, which I think is still pretty common. I removed to a bare minimum my add-ons and everything I could think of, I ran malware/virus/spy scans (no issues), cleaned caches, registries, etc, too, but it didn't help. I researched and read this may be due to the 'multi-process' thing with quantum so i looked and saw firefox had 2-3 processes running in my task manager. They are each using equal amounts of data than what the one process used to use, so it's tripling my ram usage. (They were still running even after I closed ff down, that's how slow the response was.)

I read that I could change it back to use one process, but it also said it would void the warranty to do it...so...i don't want to screw anything up and it's an intermittent problem. Since It isn't happening all the time, I can't pinpoint when or what is causing it - different pages, different times, etc. Sometimes I have 15 tabs open with no problem, then sometimes it's just two and boom. Sometimes it's running for many hours with no issues, sometimes it happens after just a few hours.

I see others are having ram issues too, so I have to ask, Is this the new norm, Is it a compatibility problem with something else or will this be fixed in an update? Any idea?

No, it is your system reacting to the browser and settings. Is a matter of finding the right settings is all. Old systems have issues. Most XP users are on the Extended Release Version https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018 as are some Win7 older systems. Firefox 57 is just the start as it is only reading web pages and converting it to readable or listenable/watchable material.

See if the settings took in the update : Go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Help ? --> Troubleshooting Information Page and take a look in the Accessibility section if accessibility is set to "true" there. if yes, go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser. Restart Firefox

and

You could try this please : Go the Menu then Tools --> Options --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 0 = No Multi-processor = slow again. TRY 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please.

4gig is not common, 8 is and that is pushing things. I always recommend 16 at the minimum , I have 32 gig.

Resize your recycle bin to something realistic. It takes room as well as ram. Right click Properties.

If have enough room on your hard drive : Open the System Folder then Click on left side Advanced System Settings which opens System Properties click the Advanced Tab then click Performance button Settings then the Advanced Tab then Click the Change under Virtual Memory click Custom Size and Change Size to where it says Recommended Size then Click Set and then Click Apply then please Re-boot.

NOTE : the recommended size is greyed out, put those numbers into both sets.

System - -> Advanced System Settings --> System Properties - -> Advanced Tab - -> Change Virtual Memory - -> Custom Size - -> ENTER Recommended Size - -> Set - -> Apply-- > Reboot Is in here also : https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/15055/windows-7-optimize-windows-better-performance

Thank you so much for your help - so far, so good. I'm not great at the behind the scenes things because I don't always know where to find things and sometimes I don't know the terms, but you made it easy with great step by step instructions. Also, thanks for the swift reply, it's much appreciated.
