Hi  !

Go to the Library (Ctrl + Shift + B) - press Ctrl + A and it will highlight all your bookmarks and show the number of bookmarks you have at the bottom.

(1) Go to Library and select (highlight) my top level bookmarks folder. (2) Search on "/" to list all bookmarks, including those in subfolders. (3) Highlight one of the listed bookmarks, then press Ctrl + A to select all listed bookmarks. Number shows up at the bottom.

Thanks for the solution.

Note that you can also find a total count in the name of an automatically created compressed .jsonlz4 backup.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Note that a colon is also a useful search character especially if you have JavaScript bookmarklets or data URIs.

What triggers an automatically created compressed .jsonlz4 backup? Does it get created the first time you open Firefox each day?

When I create a *.json backup file from the Library pulldown menu in a directory of my choosing, there is no total item count in the filename. Is it possible for the user to save to the default backup directory and would that create the count in the filename?

While the Chosen Solution already meets my needs, it is also very convenient to quickly check number using the automatically created alternative.

Yes, the compressed .jsonlz4 backup is created when Firefox is started. Since there is a hash included then only when there have been made changes to a bookmark a new backup will be created. This avoids getting a lot of backups with the same set of bookmarks and you lose an important backup from longer ago.
