I have some shockwave files that I use to teach Astronomy. They no longer work on Firefox 55, they do on Safari though.
The last time I taught this class in the spring semester (ended June 2017), these files worked. These files were from Pearson dated from 2009. They use an htm file to call a swf file. These files are embedded in my PowerPoint lectures.
I have discovered that my version of Safari does play these files.
I have installed Adobe Flash player, then deinstalled it, and reinstalled it again. No help.

Are these files retrieved from internet or are this local files retrieved via the file: protocol?
For the latter you need to toggle this pref on the about:config page.
- plugins.http_https_only = false
You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

These files are not retrieved from the internet, in that the files are on my hard drive.
I do not understand the meaning of the use of the file protocol. Obviously, I'm a neophyte. Can you explain that some more, or point me in the right direction.
I did change the about:config page and ran the PowerPoint animation successfully.
Thanks.
