I have been using Firefox for a very long time, I have three add-ons 1/ Adblock Plus 2/ IDM (Internet Download Manager) 3/ Personas Plus. I never had any issues until I had upgraded to Firefox 54.0.1. I have found Firefox to be extremely slow from the time I open it. I had played around with disabling and enabling these add-ons and found that the updates of adblock is what makes Firefox to freeze and lag for about a minute before it starts working. I never had any problems prier to 54 update. I require the adblock updates as without them I get all the crap from advertising and other rubbish. I have never used Internet Explorer beforew and I had to get a friend to show me to work it and found that even with all the add-ons that I have on Firefox Internet Explorer was Extremely Fast. I don't really want to go to Internet Explorer but I don't want to be waiting for ever or so it seems with Firefox to start working. I would like to know what has happened to Firefox and it's gone from the best web browser to the well nowhere near its capabilities.. I already had lagging and freezing point while writing this issue. It is very frustrating to see a top rated web browser doing such negative things. If anyone can help on this issue please let me know as I still want Firefox to be my only Web Browser. Thanks in advance.

We have seen more reports that Adblock Plus is slowing down Firefox. You can consider to use uBlock Origin as an alternative.

I've had the exact same issue, been using Adblock Plus on Firefox on a Mac for many years and somehow gotten used to Firefox getting ever so slightly slower and slower with suddenly by Version 54 everything more or lessed slowed down to a schreeching halt:

- entering text into the address bar became veeery laggy - websites would take forever to load - scrolling up and down on websites became laggy and unresponsive - my eyes started to hurt from constantly watching the beachball of death spinning over and over :)

Tried all the fixes that were suggested, re-freshed Firefox, completely erased it and re-installed it, enabled multiprocess, disabled flash plug-in, etc... nothing helped, considered giving up at some point and using Safari instead, ughh.

Besides AdBlock Plus started to let through more and more ads, even disabling the so-called whitelist didn't do anything at all. No surprise, if the advertising industry pays good money to get past the blockade. Also my Macbook's fans became way noisier as the cpu got really stressed by some internal processes, caused by Adblock Plus.

So again, I started all over erasing Firefox with all its user setting and profiles, re-installed it and used uBlock Origin this time as adblocker. Oh boy, what a difference that made! Not only did Firefox become fast, snappy and responsive, websites also loaded fast and gone were all the ads 'Adblock' Plus didn't block at all! Actually Firefox felt so much cleaner and leaner even way beyond version 54 and the Macbook is also cool and quiet again, yay!

After being frustrated for months and waisting a lot of time and energy to solve the problem with Firefox getting slower and slower I can confidently point the finger at Adblock Plus, at least in my case. If you're having similar issues it might be worth to try binning AdBlock Plus and use some other adblocker in it's place, erasing the user profile and doing a complete fresh install might be a good idea too. Besides, the fact that some ads may be whitelisted internally in Adblock Plus without being affected by the switch is reason enough for me not to trust the developers any more. Also the negative review I gave on the Addon website for Adblock Plus got deleted a day later without any comment, hmm...
