Start page as "new tab"? I can designate a specific start page, or blank. Instead I sould like the display to look like the "new tab" with frequently visited.

Nothing is wrong. I would prefer to get a "new tab" at start up. the one with all of the frequently, or recently visited tiles.

Go to about:preferences -> General -> and set the home page to about:newtab

This could be done via: about:preferences --> General --> Firefox Starts to Show a Blank Page.

"Blank Page" shows a blank page. The new tab page shows common sites.
