Why no sound when using Firefox; sound when using other browsers?

Recently, I have no sound when trying to view any type of video on one of my PC's using Firefox. Not a problem on a second PC using Firefox. On the problem PC, when I open the sound mixer icon, I see the Firefox icon is showing sound being received (i.e., a green vertical pulsating line). But, the speaker icon shows nothing in the vertical bar.

I have no sound problems using either Internet Explorer or Chrome. I also have no problem listening to music already installed on the PC. I've tried one of the You Tube video solutions without success (e.g., running services.msc; going to windows audio and turning it off and then on.) I've found another suggested solution which involves a number of steps starting with regedit and ending with a deletion of the firefox.exe number key. I did not try that one since most of the respondents said it didn't work for them.

Hopefully, someone has a solution. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

You can give this a try. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-to-do-if-firefox-wont-play-any-sounds Myself I have never seen a green vertical line. Check at the top of a tab and if you see a little speaker make sure that that tab has no x through it. I have found that if mute a tab will carry on until change it with a mouse over and click

Appreciate the quick response. I'm embarrassed to say how stupid I was. After all was said and done, I finally noticed a very small sound icon that was muted. Unmuted it and all was well.

If you check the url you suggested I check, you'll see the green vertical line or bar in the graphic. It shows the fluctuating sound levels during a video, or a music piece for that matter. Again, thanks for answering.

mattcamp posted this answer that worked for me,

I've been using Firefox for years, never had this problem. Have you tried refreshing Firefox or checking for sound driver issues?

Hello, The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information. Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information. To Refresh Firefox: 1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods: o Click the menu button , click help and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open. o If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page. 2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it. 3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported. 4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen. Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us! Thank you.
