I would like to have a way to return to the old download icon on firefox which showed time remaining instead of the icon simply filling up.

Hi,

With the recent firefox update, the download icon has been changed. Now instead of showing time remaining, it shows an over simplified icon with a bar being filled up. Previously, a time remaining was useful at a glance. Any way to fix this?

Cheers, ImTheRedMenace

Yes, the animated download icon on the Navigation Toolbar used to show an estimate of the remaining time. Now I don't know if it's hours or seconds. Does some 3rd party now have to create an add-on merely to get this functionality back?

Try this out;

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/download-status-bar/ Download Status Bar If you are the kind of person who likes to have total control over every aspect of your downloads, "Download Status Bar" is the add-on you are looking for.

I appreciate the idea but unfortunately this is not what I am looking for. I would just like a solution how to return the old time bar.

When you scroll all the way down on the add-on that   FredMcD   suggested,   you will find this :

Remaining Time: Remaining time to complete the download.

Download Time: Time spent to complete the download. This information will be available after download has completed.

You can find the most accurate information by clicking the arrow button and viewing the individual downloads to see the percentage converted into hours, minutes and seconds. You can restore a progress bar to the toolbar button itself using a custom style rule.

There are three ways to apply custom style rules to Firefox user interface elements:

  • Create a userChrome.css file (Firefox reads this file at startup)
  • Use the Stylish for Firefox extension (Firefox 54-56; won't style UI in Firefox 57+)
  • Use the Greasemonkey extension (Firefox 54-56; won't style UI in Firefox 57+)

You can find the rule here:

This post has the steps to create a userChrome.css file (if you've never created one before): https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1164362#answer-978078

Creating the userChrome.css file is the perfect solution. I had no idea one could customize this so easily. Thank you so much for your detailed instructions, jscher2000 !

After upgrade from 53.0.3 to 54.0.1 32bit on Win 7 64bit the progress bar icon disappeared entirely during download; does not chg to a simple bar being filled, it simply remains as the download arrow. The Firefox taskbar button continues to fill in green so I know download progresses. I know I can click on arrow to see detailed progress (not helpful because I must do this again after win minimize/restore), and perhaps I can futz w. css files to get proper behavior, but what I want to know from development is WHY DO I HAVE TO? Why was it necessary to chg this behavior between 53-54 ?? I also dont need a workaround that will become obsolete in 56/57, I just need you to LEAVE IT ALONE and restore useful FF behaviors. (NOTE: see Mozilla's own descr here for proper/"official" behavior: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/where-find-and-manage-downloaded-files-firefox

jscher2000, thx for too-quick reply, but this is not a "wish"; I need to know why behavior chgd from that which Mozilla itself documents officially.

I was replying to your request to have the feature restored. We often do not know the answer to "why" questions and usually they are rhetorical, so I will leave that to you and your favorite search engine to sort out.

Thx very much, jscher2000, I have no wish to be argumentative or rhetorical. Realize support forum/contributors do their best and have no direct "link" w. development or prod planning, so I will follow yr advice and query/feedback Mozilla. Thx again.

I'm sorry to have to report that the fix so kindly provided by jscher2000 involving the creation of a userChrome.css file no longer works as of Firefox 55. Now the download arrow simply blanks out entirely when a download is in progress. Any suggestions, other than deleting userChrome.css and going back to the new default behavior?

The bits and pieces that the custom rule could show are no longer generated in Firefox 55, so that's why you just see nothing there now. As far as I know, there's no solution to this without an add-on (if any have popped up to do this).

You can delete the rule out of userChrome.css and keep the file for possible future use, or delete the whole file.
