Dear Firefox Assistance Volunteers,

I have tried everything to prevent those damn suggestions to pop out as soon as i write "P" in the search bar ! None of them work ! Deleting the history, checking/unchecking everything in the options, using CCleaner, even deleting them manually ! They keep coming back ! It looks that my browser has an issue ...

I spent my whole afternoon trying to figure out how to fix this problem, and another 10 minutes now creating an account in order to ask your help ! Please help me finding an answer to this problem AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, as I'm not the only one using the browser now, and I don't want the other persons to see my history !!!

Thank you in advance for your prompt assistance.

Warm regards, Boufcon.

Separate Issue; Your System Details shows;

Installed Plug-ins

Shockwave Flash 25.0 r0 Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0
Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here:

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html Uninstall Flash Player | Windows

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html Uninstall Flash Player | Mac

Then reinstall the latest version.

Note: Windows users should download the active_x for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the active_x.

Flash Player Version: 25.0.0.171

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Direct link scans current system and browser Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, Win IE . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

The only ones that will see your profile data are those with access to your user account.

You didn't say what exactly you tried, so we go over what you already did.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.

The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on Cache and Form And Search History.

I deleted my shockwave flash plugins, and reinstalled the newest one, as shown in the enclosed screen shot, the issue is not solved. I have also checked and unchecked every box in every option tab, including privacy - no effet. Does uninstalling and reinstalling the browser will do anything ? I'm tempted to do this, but I don't want to loose all my customizations though.

As stated, flash was a Separate Issue.

As to the settings I instructed, is this what you did?

I did that, does not work. Sorry for the late reply.

Type in the address bar   about:config   (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked) Type and look for the preference : browser.search.suggest.enabled and set it's value to   false

Is this in the search bar drop-down list or in the location/address bar drop-down list?

To prevent Firefox from remembering search terms you used before you would have to disable the search history in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> Remember search and form history".

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

Use these steps to remove saved (form) data from a drop-down list:

  1. click the (empty) input field on the web page to open the drop-down list
  2. highlight an entry in the drop-down list with the mouse or cursor Down key
do not click the mouse or press the Enter key
  3. press the Delete key (on Mac: Shift+Delete) to delete the highlighted entry

Note that Firefox shows search suggestions that are marked as suggestions in the drop-down list. You can disable these suggestions in "Options/Preferences -> Search"

You can disable suggestions for the Google Search bar by right-clicking in the search bar input field and remove the tick before "Show Suggestions".

As you have already indicated that you checked the settings in the 3-bar menu   -   just in case you are   not   talking aboout searches in the search bar, but about searches in the address bar instead :
Type in the address bar   about:config  (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked) Type and look for the preference : browser.urlbar.suggest.searches and set it's preferences to   false

I have no issues with google search bar. I deleted all the files manually by hovering on them and pressing delete, but they keep coming back after i close the browser ! Super strange, right ?

I got this preference to false, closed and opened the browser, but the suggestions are still there ... You can see that in the enclosed screenshot ...

This is likely about showing history items as a suggestion in the location/address bar drop-down list (no star, so bookmarks aren't involved). I also see a "switch to tab item" in the list.

The location bar drop-down list can show history items, bookmarked pages, pages opened in tabs, and search suggestions. You can set what suggestions show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar via Options/Preferences -> Privacy

  • Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs

If you want to clear out the list of all items that you see then you can rename/remove the places.sqlite database files with Firefox closed.

You can remove all places.sqlite file(s) including the places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal SQLite temp files in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You lose all history when you delete places.sqlite

This must be driving you nuts   !

You may already have tried/done (most) of this , but would you take a look at this article, please :

Alright, alright, I got no other plugin that might suggest me searches based on my history, so deleting those files in the mozilla folder should fix it !!

I have 3 folders in my profiles folder. The first 2 contain places.sqlite files (see images) Should i delete the 2 first folders, or only the places.sqlite files located in the folder ?

more options

You shouldn't delete these folders because you will lose all your personal Firefox data.

Safest is to move the places.sqlite files to a safe location to have them as a backup. That way you can test whether it has any effect and you can consider to undo this change.

The second screenshot shows a rather old profile folder from 2015. The last screenshot shows the files I was talking about (places.sqlite, places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal) and you can move these three files to a backup location. Make that you first close Firefox (File > Exit) before making changes to the profile folder.

It seems to work now - Now it only suggest me the pages I've bookmarked, which is fine (see image). I put the places.sqlite file in a new folder, and it looks great so far, so many thanks for your help and your patience ! Now this also deleted all my little thumbnails on my favourite websites bar, but I don't mind that :) You guys truly provided me a great and super fast assistance from the beginning, thank you !

Best regards, Jakub.

You will have to use each of the bookmarks (click and visit the website link) to make Firefox retrieve the favicon.
