Before 54.ob1 I used to be able to open the new tab page with the plus sign on the tab bar. Now it just opens a search page. Where did the new tab page go? How do I get to it? Thanks

Chosen solution

Try disabling or removing the QuickWeatherTracker extension on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

With Firefox 41 (and higher), it's no longer possible to customize the page shown in a new tab via changing the preference browser.newtab.url in about:config.’’' Because of the fact that hijackers abused the preference in the past, Mozilla decided to remove it (see bug 1118285). Fortunately, by removing it, Mozilla also introduced a new API to bring this functionality back to life as an add-on. This add-on allows the user to choose a certain page in a new tab.

New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

This is also available using Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/

Restore squared tabs, appmenu, add-ons bar, small button view and more on Australis UI (Windows/MacOSX/Linux + Fx 29+).

I also see Tab Mix Plus in your System Details list. I assume that this extension is also able to set the new tab page, so you may have to check its settings in case something is broken in the current beta.

Solution posted by jscher solved the problem. Some how the QuickWeatherTracker got in there and seemed to be the problem. It was disabled and the new tab page worked like it is suppose to. Thanks ever so much for the help. Thank you again..

I think most likely it arrived on your system as part of a bundle of MyWay or affiliated software. It might not be the only item you hadn't noticed until now, so you might want to run a scan for anything bad using the following free program:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

It’s very sad, but many software downloaders/ installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well.

You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print.

You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does.

From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

Note that these programs can also change browser/computer settings.

Problem didn't appear until I installed Firefox 54.ob1. I am not saying that that is where it came in but the extension QuickWeatherTracker was installed in extensions. I don't remember installing it. But thanks for the heads up. Thanks.
