The latest update on 52.0b2 (32-bit) has caused the browser to become translucent below the menu bar. I cannot see the rest of the page. Please help me.

Running windows 7 ultimate. Been using Firefox since forever. After the latest update when I open Firefox only the left top portion of the menu bar and top right minimize, restore down, and close button are visible. The File, Edit, View, Bookmarks and webpage address etc. are all fully functional. I can change pages, type in url's, bring up new page tabs, so it's working but everything below what should be the web page displayed is not visible. The view is translucent with whatever screen was visible before opening Firefox. I ran system restore to a date prior to this latest update and it worked fine until Firefox automatically updated again. I have not added any new programs, but did update Adobe Flash Player. Please help! I don't like Internet Explorer. Thanks

many thanks conrad. when you said in your original post that the latest update caused it, do you know which version you were on before (51 release candidate or 52.0b1)? if you are not sure, could you please test for us if Firefox 52.0b1 is behaving the same - you could download it from http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/51.0b1/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2051.0b1.exe i think ultimately an update for your graphics driver would help, but i would ask you to keep the current one for now, until we have pinned down the exact code-change that caused this problem to appear, so that we can generally fix it for other potentially affected users as well...

Hello Phillip. Did as requested. Firefox started fine. Closed the program then restarted again. Took a few seconds to initialize as auto updated and then back to the same problem. I am continuing to start the program in "safe made" as suggested by Fred McD and will try his suggestion removing addons. Thanks for your support.

Hello Phillip. Did as Fred requested and that solved the issue. The addon in question is my antivirus program I have been running for a few years now. As copied from that addon page.......

360 Internet Protection 5.0.0.1005 Latest update, Dec 7,2016.

The extension will keep you away from phishing and malware sites. This extension is web threat protection of 360 Total Security for Firefox. It's based on the cloud malicious URL database of 360 cloud security center. It can identify malicious URL in real-time and protect you from web threats. The capabilities of anti-fraud, anti-phishing and anti-malicious URL will be enabled once installed. Note: 1. You need to install latest 360 Total Security to have the above functions. 2. Support Windows Version of 360 Total Security only.

Seems there is a stability issue here. Does that solve the problem? Will there be a fix for this? Thanks for your support.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

Hello Fred Using this method works. I am now getting the full web page, but the problem still exists. I posted the troubleshooting information to Phillip as he requested. Hope this might be helpful for you. Thanks Conrad

It could be the work of one of your add-ons. Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.

many thanks conrad. when you said in your original post that the latest update caused it, do you know which version you were on before (51 release candidate or 52.0b1)? if you are not sure, could you please test for us if Firefox 52.0b1 is behaving the same - you could download it from http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/51.0b1/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2051.0b1.exe

i think ultimately an update for your graphics driver would help, but i would ask you to keep the current one for now, until we have pinned down the exact code-change that caused this problem to appear, so that we can generally fix it for other potentially affected users as well...

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Hello Fred. Did as you requested and that solved the issue. The addon in question is my antivirus program I have been running for a few years now. As copied from that page.......

Thanks for your support.

thanks - this addon depends on an npapi plugin, which will no longer work in firefox 52 and onwards, so at the moment i'd recommend that you totally remove it. "360 Total Security" would need to re-architect that extension for modern firefox versions: https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/

in any case i have filed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1336635 for us to figure out how to deal with this breakage.
