Amazon and Facebook pages show up as a jumble of characters in my Firefox browser, but not Chrome, and I don't have Kaspersky (I have Avast).

It started with Facebook. When I go to facebook.com I get a screen with a jumble of characters. Now it is happening with Amazon.com. All I can find from google searches is a solution if I use Kaspersky, but I do not. I use Avast. This isn't happening on my Chrome browser - it is specific to Firefox. I've tried using Avast and Malwarebytes to remove any viruses and malware, but the problem persists. What could be happening?

thanks - nothing obvious there. could you try disabling ssl scanning in avast like explained in How to troubleshoot security error codes on secure websites and see if this can make a difference?

I followed the directions and then closed my browser and reopened it. The problem is still there.

Removing the cookies worked for the Amazon site. Thanks!

I followed the 2nd set of instructions for facebook. When I opened my browser again Firefox asked about updating my setting or importing settings maybe and then I got a screen that said success! When I try to visit any pages now I get an error page that says "Your Connection is Not Secure". The Error Code under the Advanced button is " SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER" I am using Chrome to respond to you because I can't pull up anypages on Firefox right now. I don't know if refreshing helped with Facebook or not. Is there an easy fix to this Error Code?

Update: I closed out of Firefox and reopened it. This time I was asked to choose a profile. I pulled up my old profile before I hit refresh Firefox and it still works fine. Amazon works, but not Facebook.

I closed Firefox again and opened the new profile that was created after refreshing Firefox and it will not let me pull up any pages saying my connection is not secure.

Should I go back to my old profile?

in the new profile please try this to give us more information about the error: on the your connection is not secure page, click on the advanced button, then on the error code, copy the text to the clipboard (like shown in the screenshot) and then paste it here into a reply in the forum.

thank you!

thank you - so it appears to be the qustodio parental control software that is running on the device and intercepting secure connections that will cause those issues...

more options

Do you have this issue with multiple websites? Try www.gmail.com , www.outlook.com. Kindly send a screenshot of the same while you are trying to access. Also can you say the exact time that is shown on your watch/clock and not on your PC.

more options

Phillip, thank you for the tip on Qustodio. Is it causing the problems with the Error Code or Facebook or both? Also, if it is with the Error Code any ideas why now after the refresh and not before?

more options

Akash, the time on my clock is 10:03 am.

Which issue are you referring to? The facebook and amazon problem or the Error Code in Firefox after the refresh?

more options

SOLVED! I removed my user profile on Qustodio and closed my browser. When I reopened I chose the Firefox profile created after the Firefox refresh. Amazon and Facebook work now and I am not getting any Error Codes. Thank you Phillip for your help! Your advice to remove the cookies and refresh Firefox worked great! - Qustodio just complicated things.
