I had to reset my PC due to a Windows problem and after I reloaded Firefox and Nightly, I found that both were opening the start page to Universal Search instead of the Firefox or Nightly Homepage. I reset the options section for default Homepage but it changes back to Universal Search every time I close and reopen Firefox. Suggested troubleshooting hints haven't been useful.

How about getting rid of this extension? Universal Search 1.0.8 (universal-search@mozilla.com) https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons

The actual extension causing the problem was Activity Stream and disabling it solved the issue.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
