I cannot use the shift key when using Firefox a nothing is inputted. I don't have this problem in IE and other programs. It started on 29th July 16, after an update. I have looked at support and tried refresh, re-install, pressing control, shift etc. recommended in other, similar issues to no avail.

I cannot add images r give troubleshooting info as having to use IE to ask this question as I'm unable to sign in with email address using @

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem. Thank you!

The odd thing is that it only happens in Firefox.

If you haven't already, close Firefox and reboot your PC.

You could check to see if there is a keyboard driver update by entering 'drivers' into the Start Menu search box, then click 'Update device drivers' in the results, and select 'keyboard.'

Only other thing I can think of is that some weird malware is doing it, which could possibly explain why it's FF specific, so you can try scanning with these free programs which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8/10 have antivirus built-in already.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

thanks for getting back to me - i do run mse and have also run the safety scanner which reports no problems.

i've just noticed if i press shift - exclamation mark, either in firefox or internet explorer, it opens up ie if in firefox or another ie window so i reckon its probably time to try a new keboard

been doing some research and wireless keyboards can be prone to key issues

thanks again and hope a new one sorts it out
