Trying to get a manual for a product, a program downloaded and now it shows up whenever I open a new tab. It does not even go to the homepage (I have reset that). It used to come up with a choice of different locations I had recently been to. It will not do that anymore and I cannot find where to change it.

Most likely you acquired one or more bad extensions.

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

That was fast. It's probably a good idea to open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, and investigate any remnants.

After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with the software you actually agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

After I found the problem, I did remove the programs. Thank you!
