Once in awhile I bump into a website where downloads render corrupt file name (for example bdxy45hs) with exe.part extension.

As I understand. Firefox native download manager pulls parts of a file download and assembles file parts at end of the download. Sometime the file name does not reconcile, hence corrupt file name with exe.part.

My security program, scans download and shows the corrupt file name.exe.part. Another (one or two immediate) pull of the same file usually will render with correct file name.

So, I looked for but, cannot find browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone in about:config.

Comments on whether exe.part is simply a known Firefox hiccup and or ideas how to sort.

Thanks

Hello So, does "browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone" exist in FF46.0.1x64..?

So, is my unsure understanding of .part reasonable..?

So, is scrabble-filename.exe.part simply a known Firefox hiccup and any ideas how to sort.

Thanks

browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone is gone for quite some time. See bug 1067467#c2

It is possible that security software (anti-virus, firewall) is causing the problem. Try to disable security software temporarily (or at least the real time scan during the download) to see if that makes a difference.

Well, security software may be causal (blamed)... but, since exe.part does not occur from IE11 or Chrome51. I'm looking to sort in my preferred browser with my preferred security. Again, not a deal breaker. Just thought I'd ask ....if preference toggle might sort. G-search seems to assign .part as Firefox name. And I'm not first Firefox-er to report .part And .part is only random reproducible.

Thanks

Firefox likely behaves differently than the other browsers. Firefox closes the file after flushing each chunk to avoid issues with crashes or hangs. Your security software may think that the download has finished and can try to scan the file while Firefox is still downloading the file. This can cause all kind of issues.

Security renders same hash regardless of file name corrupt or not.

"Security may think that the download has finished and try to scan the file while Firefox is still downloading the file". Yes, reasonable explain along with nnn+ variables.

"Firefox closes the file after flushing each chunk". Hmm, Firefox known for memory quirks. Hmm, wonder when file name reconciles chunk.part + chunk.part + etc.

Interesting

Thanks
