After entering my master password for Firefox, why does its CPU use jump from under 1% to 13% and hold there for a few mins?

46.0.1 I'm troubleshooting crashes every few minutes but I don't know what's causing it yet. I noticed the process was climbing above 2GB of memory usage with only the Turkey (country) Wikipedia article open in a single tab.

To start me off figuring out what might be causing the crashes, I've disabled Extensions and set all Plugins to Ask. Since doing that, Firefox opens in a second and the master password prompt kicks in after about 14 seconds. After entering the password, network activity kicks off (I guess - hope - it's just sync'ing profile stuff) and then CPU jumps to 13% for Firefox and stays up there. Memory goes up and down about 20MB around the 280MB mark. It does this for about 10 mins and then calms back down to <1%.

Typical. In the time it took me to write this, it's happy now and stays around 1% after launching.

What is happenening in the machground after I enter my password - what might I be waiting on?

This morning, Firefox prompted a dialog to say that there were known issues with Apple iCloud Bookmark sync and disabled/blocked (https://blocklist.addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/blocked/i1214). After reopening Firefox it seemed to quit again (when I wasn't watching) and had a dialog for sending a crash report. This might have been simply a dialog following the initial iCloud plugin and not actually a second crash.

I now have Firefox open and it's fine for the last few minutes (I'm typing this in Firefox).

The Plugin check only listed Quicktime as needing an update but Apple suggested just removing it as it is no longer required by modern Windows browsers so I've uninstalled quicktime and it's no longer listed in Plugin check. So Java, Flash and Silverlight are up to date - all others are unknown.

If it crashes again, I'll revert to safe mode but I guess iCloud Bookmarks was the culprit.

Many thanks for the guidance.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

and

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

Does this still happen if you disconnect Sync in case you are using it?

Previously, after disabling all Extensions and setting all Plugins to Ask, Firefox worked fine. I noticed that after entering my master password, the CPU and network access (for Firefox in Task Manager) would be about 13% and 1% respectively. After about 10 minutes everything settled down. I re-enabled the iCloud (Apple) Bookmarks sync and AdBlock extensions and everything seemed okay initially. I don't recall using it much since then though - I think I avoided Firefox as it was having this delay (kind of like a pause/hang) before it was available to use sometimes after launching it and I didn't have time to worry about it so I just switched to the other browsers.

This evening I thought I'd have another go. This time Firefox would become unresponsive within a couple of seconds of opening. I was just about able to make it to disable AdBlock but I couldn't get iCloud bookmarks to disable before the hang would kick in.

I deleted %AppData% Roaming and Local Mozilla folders as I just wanted to get back in. Then, of course, it was fine. Once I saw your requests for information, I restored the Roaming aand Local Mozilla folders to collect information and now when I relaunched, extensions are all disabled and plugins set to ask and Firefox seems to have settled.

The content of the about:support is too long for the reply. I copied it to a text file but I can't attach files.

The crash reports: bp-afd23713-5b72-45a5-ad05-1abf62160516 16/05/2016 23:12 bp-4f6db8cb-5ec1-4c28-a590-5db622160516 16/05/2016 23:12 bp-c3574bda-89bc-47cf-9c8a-3a5712160516 16/05/2016 23:11 bp-b1fbf83d-42dc-46d0-85a0-766fc2160516 16/05/2016 23:10 bp-4dec0d3a-aba6-4ca9-9aef-1503d2160514 14/05/2016 22:16 bp-2d594814-65d7-4bac-94b9-5b3ff2160512 12/05/2016 14:09 bp-dc2ce5bb-150f-4b8f-a121-4ea182160512 12/05/2016 14:06 bp-cb9f63cf-1859-4cd6-b0a5-b91f42160511 11/05/2016 14:08 bp-971536bc-0cb0-4f79-9e2e-436162160511 11/05/2016 13:46

I don't want to waste anyone's time so I'm okay with resetting to defaults. I am using the Mozilla Sync functionality, so I expect my settings to return anyway. If I do end up resetting, I'll watch to see if the sync brings the problem back and post a message.

I'll also try and get the about:support stuff up.

Thanks for having a go.

Use this link to check that your plugins are up-to-date. If any are listed as unknown or research, do not worry about them.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

Chosen Solution
