I have been receiving conflicting information from Mozilla about this issue.

A week ago I received this notification: "Your Firefox is now out of date, but the latest version is not supported on your system." And told to upgrade my Mac system as soon as possible.

Fair enough. But on the same day I also received the information that this update/non-supported issue will not take effect till August 2016.

And now I'm getting constant messages telling me to update my Firefox to version 46.0.1.

So what is actually happening? Is it still okay to update Firefox until August, without changing my Mac?

the https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2016/04/29/update-on-firefox-support-for-os-x/ message was shown to you by mistake - it was meant to only be displayed to so x 10.6-10.8 users who where updating to the latest alpha build of firefox, as it drops support sooner... firefox 46, 47 and presumably 48 will continue to work on your system as you are used to - later versions will just refuse to start on old os x versions. (and i'm a volunteer and do not work for mozilla)

hi janfol, yes it's recommended to update to firefox 46.0.1 at this point. and sometime between now and august you should also perform the free update of your operating system to os x 10.11, so that you can continue to get security updates for your system and other software you use: http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

Just need to know for sure. If it's recommended that I do this update, why did I get a warning a week ago that 'Your firefox is out of date but the latest version is not supported on your system?' If it still is supported on my system?

Our next-door neighbour did this (not with Firefox) kind of update of his browser at one stage, and it screwed up his system to the point where he had to take his computer in for repair. Turned out there was nothing wrong with his computer, just that the update wasn't meant for his system. I've been wary ever since.

I fully intend to upgrade to El Capitan within the next month or so, once I decide which wordprocessing software to switch to. The newest version of Pages has dropped a feature that's essential to the kind of work I do, so after 22 years of using Apple's own programme, I'm afraid I'll need to move to something else. Very irritating.

Anyway, thanks for your perspective. Are you connected with Mozilla as a developer, or are you just a Firefox user like me?

Thanks very much for the extra info. I have 10.8.5, so that's still okay? I'll take the chance and update then.

Thanks for all your help, and sorry to have been so cautious about accepting it. The word 'mistake' makes sense! Cheers....
