I have a problem that has been recurring on Windows since Windows 7 (or possibly Vista). On some installations, when I typed characters like ", and ^, they wouldn't be typed unless I typed something else after them. This is meant to support input of unconventional characters, for instance " + o gives you ö. Years ago they turned this "feature" on in Windows without asking anyone, and I've searched furiously how to turn it off. They've since removed it, I'm guessing after waves of complaints. Today when I came to work, I found out this feature from hell was back. I was about to launch a rant on StackOverflow, but then I noticed this is only happening in Firefox. It wasn't there on Friday, so something must have happened between then and now. An update perhaps? I've gone through the settings to find a way to disable this stroke of genius, I was unsuccessful. I cannot stress how incredibly annoying this "feature" is. Not only is there no ö in my language, so it's useless to me, but not being able to type " in one go slows down and messes up my typing. I have to type a space twice to get it once after the quote character, and when I want to type "observable", I get öbservable", which I may not notice if I'm typing fast. And if I do notice it, I have to go fix it, which slows me down, which in turn makes me very very angry. You get the idea. It's not causing me nearly as many problems as the ^ character though. You see, I have passwords that often end with this character. Now when I type my passwords, I type the final ^ and hit enter, and my login fails. So what I have to do is watch how many dots are appearing in the password box as I type. And sure enough, when I type the last ^, nothing appears. So I have to type it again, make sure two characters have appeared, and then delete the last one. Fantastic. I would like to know how to turn this asinine feature off. I would also, one day, like to meet the person who came up with this feature and have an intense one on one discussion with them.
