Is the problem with some websites, many? Are you downloading a file or the picture on a web page?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Sometimes this is a problem with the image's file extension.

By default, Windows hides some common extensions. To ensure that you can investigate this issue in detail, please set Windows to show ALL file extensions. This article has the steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions

If you look at some of the corrupted image files in your Downloads folder (or wherever you saved them), do they have an unusual extension for a web image? By unusual I mean something other than these three: .jpg, .png, .gif.

Thanks, both of you. This happens with the majority of webpages I visit, although it didn't used to. For example, suppose I'm trying to right-click and save a picture of a sunset; once I open my downloads folder, the picture has become corrupt. It doesn't happen all the time, but I'd say 75% of the time, and I've noticed that if I try to save the same image with another browser, it works fine. Oddly, if I download images in a .zip folder, they don't become corrupt.

I say this problem didn't used to happen, but I honestly can't pinpoint when or why it would have started. It happened sometime before the latest update, but I haven't installed anything else in a good six months.

I checked the file extensions, and they're not unusual. They're showing up as .png, although this has also happened with .jpg files in the past.

I had no idea I had two versions of Flash installed. I'll go fix that right now.

Hmm, if you drag and drop the image file onto a Firefox tab (to load the image and replace what's there), what do you get? If it's not the expected image, try right-click > View Page Info and check the content type listed there.

I tried what you suggested, jscher2000, and the image opened fine in a new tab. Out of curiosity, I tried re-saving the image after dragging and dropping it, and it saved without corruption. For a moment, I thought my problem was resolved...but when I went back to the website and tried re-saving from the source, it was corrupt again. This is so bizarre. So just to summarize: Can't right-click and save images from websites. Can save them after dragging and dropping them.

Could you go to the saved image (the original save, not the second-time save) and rename the file by adding .txt at the end of the image extension (e.g., picture1.jpg.txt) -- Windows will object, but this is just for further investigation. Then double-click the file to open it in Notepad.

What does the beginning of the file look like? This is what I see for the first four characters of sample PNG and JPG images:

PNG: ‰PNG

JPG: ÿØÿà

(After testing, you can right-click>Rename the files and remove the .txt from the end of the name.)
