WARNING: Running out-dated versions of Firefox is extremely risky. It is strongly recommended that you update to the latest version of Firefox for the latest security features.

If you would like to disable automatic updates, you can try the following:

  • Type about:config in the Firefox location bar
  • Change the value of the app.update.auto boolean to false
  • Change the value of the app.update.enabled boolean to false
  • Change the value of the app.update.channel string to none
  • Change the value of the app.update.mode integer to 0

This should stop Firefox from updating. If you change your mind and would like to update, simply undo the changes that you made.

Firefox 3.5 is rather old and vulnerable (as it does not have any of fixes for any vulnerabilities found since) as Firefox 3.5 itself came out back on June 30th, 2009 and the update 3.5.17 version you have was not the last back then as it was 3.5.19. https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

What are these Extension(s) that you are willing to risk your Windows install on?. Are you sure there have not been updates to these Extensions since the versions you have?

Depending on what those so called essential Extensions are you could use the portable Firefox 3.5.19 with those Extensions and use Firefox 45.0.1 for everything else to be secure. The portable Firefox is self contained and does not touch your normal Firefox install and Profile. It is safe as it has been around since Firefox 0.8 and homepage is at http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

If you want another locale then copy+paste the whole url in Location bar. https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla Firefox%2C Portable Ed./Mozilla Firefox%2C Portable Edition 3.5.19/

Thank you both for suggestions. Did include one other change in about:config from other suggestions found earlier, but the updates seem to be coming quicker. Just a creature of habit using the 3 5 17 because ir worked for so long.

Still seems to me that one of the folks who write extensions would have come up with an update killer for the ones like me who stick and stay

Thank you again. It has forced me to try Google Chrome with some success but still not Firefox.'

Why not explain what these essential addons are. You mention being forced to use Chrome, does Chrome support extensions you need, or have features you need  ? What are those extensions or features on Chrome ?

What are the problems on a current Firefox that you need to use an unsafe version for.

If you like the older look of Firefox have you seen and tried the addon

Don't get me wrong. I play around with retro stuff and had a Windows 3 running a few month ago, but I would not have tried to make it a system for normal use connected to the internet for day to day purposes. Just using Fx45.0.0 rather than the current point release causes security concerns. No one is going to expect to be safe on an unsupported OS or an unsupported browser.

If you cannot get along with the current Firefox, then you will be safer using a current GoogleChrome.
