I literally just turned on my computer and instead of my usual home page loading the Fox Web Security add on loaded thanking me for installing it! How can this happen without me doing anything?

Chosen solution

I would be disconcerted, too.

In case that was part of a bundle with something else you did install, here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons and other hijackers. I know it seems long, but it's really not that bad.

(For Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10; XP is somewhat different)

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Revisit Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions. All extensions are optional; none come with Firefox.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any other mystery items?

(3) You can supplement your regular security software with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article to try to root out anything else that might not belong: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

The Fox Web Security appears to be an extension. Firefox does not come with this nor would Mozilla install this on your Firefox. It was perhaps installed by you or somebody else.

Thanks but I definitely did not install this and no-one else uses this computer. When I fired up Mozilla there was a long wait then the Fox Security "Thankyou for installing" page came up instead of my usual Firefox home page. I've removed it from my add ons easily enough but it is disconcerting

Thanks very much for such in depth help. It doesn't matter to me if your recommendations take some time to work through as its worth it to be more savvy and safer!

Did you discover what installed that or what it was bundled with ?

It seems an odd addon to be installed by a hijacker, unless the Fox Web Security addon can itself be modified to block other sites, but that does not appear to be a feature of the addon.

I also found and removed DjAmol Group Inc File Search in my addon folder and there were no other programs installed on that day in my programs folder.

That remains a bit of mystery then.

I note there are some Firefox addons by

Those should be safe as that is the official Firefox site for hosting addons.

It seems the problem is resolved, but the cause is unknown.

When I found the addon I googled it and saw the following site which seemed to indicate there there could be a scam so I deleted it to be safe:
