I have used Typeit4Me for a long time and have paid for the full version. I frequently use it to fill in forms on web sites. I use Firefox (currently have 45.0.1 installed) and OSX El Capitan. For the past two months, as soon as Firefox starts I get the message "Firefox has enabled secure input. Text expanders will not work."

This is a REAL pain and defeats the object of having purchased the package. I recognise the risks of opening myself to key loggers but there must sure be way to disable this feature so I can use Typeit4Me once more.

TRhere are plenty of answers to the question about what one can do when Firefox does not release the secure input but nothing about how to disable it for form entry.

Does Firefox do that now, or could it be an add-on. If you use any password-filling or form-filling extensions, please test with those extensions disabled. You can disable extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then review the list on the right side and use the Disable button as needed.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step. Alternately, you can quit Firefox and start it up again.

Any difference?

Thanks for the quick reply but this sadly does not address the problem. I have Roboform Password Manager toolbar and this works fine so, clearly, Roboform have managed to overcome the secure input barrier. I have checked to make sure there are not other rougue add-ons but the problem is still there.

Typeit4Me (and similar Text expanders) don't work as Add-Ons but as installed programmes.

Okay, turns out Secure Input is a Mac thing that Firefox invokes for password fields. When you first start Firefox, is the cursor in a login form of some kind?

I have set my home page to Google so this is the field awaiting me when I start FF.

The Google search box should not be secured...

Do you have a Master Password set and, if so, do you get a pop-up to enter it at startup?

The Master Password exists for Roboform but this is not the problem. I may not have made myself clear. I am not using Typeit4Me for passwords but for text entry - usually email address, address, phone numbers etc. It is this that FF is preventing me from using.

Hi Posh44, I'm a Windows user, so I don't have personal experience with this issue. However, it is my understanding that Firefox should normally only use Secure Input for password fields and not for other form elements. That's why I was asking about whether Firefox might be asking for a password at startup.

The Question Details > More System Details to the right of your question lists a "LastPass Plugin". Is that something you use? If not, could you disable it as follows to see whether that makes any difference:

To set a plugin to "Never Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Look for the LastPass plugin and change "Always Activate" (or "Ask to Activate") to "Never Activate".

This might not take effect until your next Firefox startup.

If that doesn't help, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any difference?

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried them all and still can't get the text expander to work. Reckon I'll have to try the Mac Help Forum Thanks again.
