The tabs and URL/address bar disappear when I maximize Firefox on one of my dual monitors... but not the other one!

Occasionally (not always), the menu and address bar of Firefox disappear... I can recover using alt-spacebar -- when I click "restore" the address bar and all my tabs reappear. When I maximize they disappear again. While they are disappeared it's truly like they are not there -- if I right click it acts like I am clicking on the desktop underneath. This only happens on one of my dual monitors (monitor 1) -- if I restore, move to monitor 2, and maximize, the bars are there just fine. And if I move it back to monitor 1, and maximize, they disappear again. Weird, huh? I can live with it -- just thought you'd like to know. I have reinstalled Firefox completely and it fixed the problem for a while, but now it's reappeared. I'm running Windows 10. I have tried to attach a screenshot of what is looks like, including me right-clicking on the area where the title bar should be... this website doesn't seem to want to accept the screenshot, though. If it doesn't show up I will try to attach to a subsequent post.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

You can try to rename (or delete) the xulstore.json file in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Thanks -- that's a bunch of good suggestions. The problem doesn't occur all the time, so I can't tell immediately if they helped, but I'll update this in a couple of weeks if the problem crops up again.
