Addressing your first question in the title, may I assume you're referring to the search function of the URL bar?

Solution: Navigate to about:preferences#search and un-tick everything you find useless.

To change/set your homepage please navigate to the following address: about:preferences#general and modify according to your personal preferences.

I also attached an image which will show you where to find and open Options page when required (displayed inside the dark blue rectangle).

Hi, if the above doesn't fix it please try working through Remove “Search with Bing” redirect by Malware Tips.

Note that not all removal programs will detect all malware, so you may need to run several or all of them.

After removal you may need to reset your home page and search, which you can do by running the add-on SearchReset.

Thank you both for your help. Problems seem to be solved, but when I unchecked the search options at about:preferences#search there was not any sort of confirmation button for the changes, so I'll see what happens next boot up.
