Yesterday afternoon, in the middle of a session I suddenly lost the ability to open any websites on firefox. Attempting to open a bookmark or enter a URL just causes the tab to "blink" very briefly as it appears to try and proceed, but remains on the existing site. The rendered page doesn't even blink.

I've gone through all the steps mentioned in the troubleshooting guide (clearing my profile, safemode, disabling addons etc, reinstalling firefox, scanning my discs, etc etc) but still have an essentially non-functional browser. All the network settings look fine, I can load internal pages (such as about:settings), and other browsers and web programs work fine.

Initially, when opening firefox it complained about something like a tabbrowser.xml not responding (I believe on line 5972?), but doesn't complain about this anymore. Not at all sure if that's related though. Also, it had updated earlier that day to the current version of FF from the previous.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as otherwise the only option I see would be to migrate to Chrome... :/

hi, please go into the programs section of your system control panel and uninstal nvidia forceware network access manager in case you have that present.

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select Network. Look for Configure How Firefox Connects and press the Settings button. If you are using a proxy, make sure those settings are correct. If there is no proxy, first use No Proxy. If there is a problem, then try System Proxy.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Uninstalling the nVidia Forceware program immediately fixed the issue - thanks very much!

For anyone who then is unable to re-import their profile like I was, I suggest checking this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1027759#answer-645990

The standard profile re-import instructions didn't work for me, so I ended up having to just copy the actual backup FOLDER to the profiles location, then manually adding its folder name to the profiles.ini file. God knows why :|

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
