Firefox has disabled an add-on I need urgently
I have been using Zotero , the referencing tool, on Firefox without a problem.
The icon has disappeared from the toolbar. I can still get into the extension by opening it the long way but I need it back on the toolbar. The message I get is "Zotero could not be verified for use in Firefox and has been disabled".
I don't dare do much as it currently has hundreds of references on it that I cannot afford to lose. Of course it is a verified extension, it is designed to be used with Firefox and I have been using it for 3 years!!
I would value help but please keep it really simple as my computer savvy is basic. How do I stop Firefox from disabling it? I looked this up on your site and was directed to Firefox Configuration Editor which I can't actually find. Sigh. I wish your system would not mess with something so important when I have work to hand in!
Kind regards,
Kristin

Zotero 4.0.28.7 came out October 2, 2015 while there has been new versions since. A note for the old 4.0.28.7 version says "This version of Zotero for Firefox is not signed."
Version 4.0.28.9 Zotero is now signed by Mozilla for installation under Firefox 43 and above

It sounds as though you got to this article, but that it wasn't specific enough: Add-on signing in Firefox.
Zotero says their extension is signed. Do you have version 4.0.28.10? You can check the version number on support information page. Either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return
Scroll down to the Extensions heading, at the version number should be listed in the table.
Alternately, you can check on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Cmd+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then check on the right side at the very bottom (disabled extensions cluster at the end) and click the "More" link for Zotero.
If necessary, you can make a temporary exception to the signing requirement -- this is global for all extensions, there's currently no way to only make an exception for specific extensions.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste xpin and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the xpinstall.signatures.required preference to switch it from true to false -- note that this is for Firefox 43 only
Note to self -- I don't expect you to understand or research this:
This Zotero forum thread mentions possible conflicting information in a Firefox settings file that may be a common issue with unverified extensions (foreignInstall: true or foreignInstall: 1 in extensions.json): https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/51154/sign-addon-httpswikimozillaorgaddonsextensionsigning/
Thank you jscher for being so quick.
I followed everything and changed the xpinstall.signatures.required to false which has fixed it.
I have Zotero 4.0.28.7 so do you think that might be the problem?
