With a Firefox window open on El Capitan, Apple Mail crashes when reply or forward is selected and Mail tries to open the new entry window. This does not happen if the Firefox window is minimised to the toolbar. Could be some type of window handling problem. My machine is a late 2013 iMac, the version of El Capitan is 10.11.1 and the Version of Firefox is 42.0. I have seen a few other reports of this problem on Internet forums.

Update:- I have found the cause of this problem. It an antivirus plug-in downloaded from my bank (RBS) called Trusteer Rapport. I uninstalled this and all is well.
