After the most recent upgrade of Firefox my SAP Business Objects - WebIntelligencr XI application continues to get a JAVA error and crashes. I need a patch or a way to roll the browser back to the previous version. I can't do my job with it like this.

Thank you!

If the applet isn't starting, could you double-check that Firefox is allowing Java on the site?

Try using the Permissions panel of the Page Info dialog. You can call that up using any of these:

  • right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Permissions
  • (menu bar) Tools menu > Page Info > Permissions
  • click the padlock or globe icon to the left of the site address, click the ">" then the More Information button > Permissions

The Plugin permissions are at the top. Make sure Java is set to Allow.

If the applet starts and runs but then becomes nonresponsive, I don't know what would be causing that. It sounds as though we don't have much information to go on.

Rather than try an insecure release of Firefox, you may want to try a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR) intended for enterprise users. It is currently based on Firefox 38 with some security updates.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.4.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx42

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx42

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that Fx42 folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx42\Plugins
  • \Fx42\browser\plugins

Sorry to hear about the crashes.

Could you clarify whether it is a Java plugin crash or a JavaScript crash? The Java plugin is Oracle software that probably isn't affected by your version of Firefox, while JavaScript is handled internally by Firefox and JavaScript features may change from version to version.

To help us understand with more crash details:

If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones here.

To test in Firefox's Safe Mode:

Firefox's Safe Mode temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features of Firefox that might make it more prone to crashing on some systems.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any less crashy?

Your Question Details > More System Details show an older version of the Java plugin (mid-2014).

I don't know what is allowed in your environment, but if you need to stick with series 7, there was a recent update 91 that is available with an Oracle support login. I don't have the URL for that, but here are the release notes mentioning it:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/7u-relnotes-515228.html

If you can update to Java 8, you can get it from this page (since Firefox is a 32-bit browser, use the 32-bit installer "Windows Offline"):

The error message states it is a plugin. The exact message is below. SAP requires this plugin to run its WebIntelligence report creation tool.

Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U67 may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the plugin now, or you can continue to see if the plugin will complete.

Our Java version is dictated by SAP. It is specific to each version of their application. Current version 1.7.0_67. Going up or down can make the app not work.

I'm having out SAP Support team ask SAP if we can update out Java version to 1.7.0_91 as you suggested.

Thank you!

This clean reinstall per your directions seems to have resolved the issue. I'm going to run it for a few more minutes but I think I might be good.

Thank you!
