Firefox 42.0 and Firefox ESR 38.4.0 malfunction on eBay page
The issue occurs on the following page: - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gtech-AR02-Air-Ram-Filter-Cordless-Bagless-Upright-Vacuum-Cleaner-/331140744091?hash=item4d1986c39b:g:fUUAAOSwsFpWRVKg
There is an option to collect from an Argos retail outlet and the location options are shown after the user enters his/her postcode, e.g. SK85DR
The problem is that the request times out with Firefox but not with Opera 12 or with Google Chrome which both allow me to select the Argos branch, from a list displayed by eBay, from which to collect my eBay purchase.
The operating system is Windows XP SP3. I wish you to verify that the problem exists and to refer it to Mozilla.
Chosen solution
I added an Argos item to the basket, then clicked the shipping time and chose Click & Collect, then entered that postcode, and got a list as shown in the first screen shot.
The site is sending a request using this address to fill in the list:
If you click that, does Firefox successfully retrieve a huge block of text starting with:
/**/EBayLocal.Widget.__1447707934637({"Errors":null,
Did this problem just start in Firefox 42? One of the headline changes in Firefox 42 is tracking protection in private windows, which also can be enabled in regular windows. If Firefox has applied tracking protection to block some content, a new shield icon should appear at the left end of the address bar. The following article has more information about this feature, how to make temporary exceptions, and how to turn it off if it's more trouble than it's worth: What happened to Tracking Protection?.
Does that seem relevant?
If not... when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Clear Firefox's Cache
See: How to clear the Firefox cache
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
- right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
- (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
- click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
If the problem persists, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

This problem does not occur with Comodo IceDragon (latest version 40.1.1.18). You are probably aware that IceDragon is a customised Firefox.
Well, no interest from Mozilla. Quelle surprise! Two others also have reported experiencing the issue but the usual silence reigns.

Thank you Jefferson. I had set privacy.trackingprotection.enabled to TRUE. Changing it to FALSE removed the problem.
I appreciate the trouble you have taken to help me.
