I am often unable to enter text either with virtual or physical keyboard, making searches and logins impossible in Firefox, forcing me to use Chrome. What to do

more options

Am using Google Nexus 9 with latest Android. Since one of the recent os updates the keyboard sometimes fails to appear when I enter a text box on a page whilst using Firefox. This makes searches and logins impossible. Both virtual and physical Bluetooth keyboards fail to register. It is intermittent. Visiting the same page in Chrome has no problem, but I want to continue with Firefox. Please advise, if I can't fix this I will have to abandon Firefox. Shame!

Hi Rijumati, I understand that there are some forms on some websites that do not load a keyboard to enter data into that text field. I am happy to help.

For testing, can you please provide an example to where this is happening? Also does this happen with the default keyboard or another keyboard that was added?

This is a known problem on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with form fields when you open a page from any of Firefox's home screens (bookmarks, history, top sites, previous tabs). A bug was filed for it on Oct. 6th, and there will be a fix for it in Firefox 42 for Android, which is anticipated this week.

For now, the quickest workaround I've found is:

menu > Reload

Other reported workarounds take longer:

  • lock and unlock the screen (off and on alone doesn't do it)
  • rotate orientation and back again (doesn't work on mine)
  • load pages using the address bar (type a few characters then autocomplete)

Firefox 42.0 seems to have fixed the problem, phew what a relief I can stay using Firefox! Thanks for all the hard work from the Firefox team.

I have this problem on 42.0.1. I think this may be related to having multiple tabs open as this also happens on my win7 desktop. I tend to have 5 to 15 tabs open at a time as i research multiple things at a time.

Hi Multicsfan, it would be a good idea to start a new question (or two) and describe the symptoms in more detail:

  • Can you find a pattern to when the keyboard does not appear on Android? Particular kinds of form controls, specific sites, sequence of events leading up to loading of the page? This thread relates to that third point, as described in more detail above.
  • Can you find a pattern to when the keyboard does not appear on Windows?
