No Sync.

Chosen solution

Use with Extreme Caution;

Bookmark Duplicate Cleaner {web link} Scans for bookmark duplicates and allows you to delete them

Bookmarks Checker - check for bad links {web link} Check favorites for broken or bad links. It checks for bad links and displays a report if it finds something. Check for 404 links, timeout links.

Have you have problems with Firefox in the past?

Have you tried the reset/restore option (Do not do it now) ?

Are you using Sync to sync the bookmarks to other devices?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database file then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database file from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder. Note that you lose the history when a new places.sqlite gets created.

Bookmark Duplicate Cleaner and Bookmark Checker helped me delete the duplicates. Although it was long and tedious it was better than trying to do it from the Bookmark list. I hope it doesn't happen again. If it does, I'll try and find what I did to cause it.

There are several ways it could have happened. Bad sync, merging from another browser, resetting/restoring Firefox.

All you can do is to keep an eye out.
