What is your newtabs page?

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type browser.newtab.url This tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened. If you want, right click and select Modify. You can change the setting to;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any web page or about: page you want.

The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as browser.startup.homepage.

I changed the about:newtabl:url to about:newtab, but it still came up with yahoo search. I thought perhaps i had to close Firefox and start again. This time I got a message "Parsing error: no element found". There was more, but it disappeared before I could see it all, and again showed yahoo search as the url. I checked my old computer, and the new one looks exactly the same as the old one, which works as I would like.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove Yahoo Anything. Now do the same in the computers Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

After the problem is fixed, Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Have had the SAME problem! Only thing is, that there are some *DEVIOUS* websites out there! All I wanted to do was to be able to look @an instructional video in a few days that I don't have time to watch at the moment. So, I looked & looked re some video download thing that was recommended by someone.

Scanned it for virus after DL, and it supposedly came up safe. ALSO, when it was "install" time, I *DID* uncheck the checked boxes that had to do with changing home page, search engine, an unheard-of browser, etc, so I could keep things AS THEY WERE before this file download.

What happened when the "install" was finished? I come here to my Firefox browser to open a new tab for whatever, and Yahoo search engine pops up instead of what had been a BLANK new tab. Then when I decided to look at something on my home page, what happened again? Suddenly some "stupid" page (don't even recall now; think it was related to this program DL, if I recall ~~ frustrated enough, I didn't pay attention to what it was, really) showed up, and NOT my REAL HOME PAGE!!

All this after I had meticulously UNchecked each of the 3 or 4 boxes that were checked in the file that had some devious plans to CHANGE a bunch of stuff on my computer!

BOTTOM LINE ... have to be really careful. Something UNchecked doesn't necessarily mean it will be taken seriously ... I call it a joke file, so awful it was. Anyway, Mozilla help here did help me get back my blank new tab, and I have my home page back, too, tho' (while knowing where to do that already) I had to do it a couple of times before it "took!" WHY it didn't the first time, no idea. Think that was messed up royally by the file DL, too, tho' for the home page correction I did NOT have to go to about:config like I had to to dump Yahoo search as a new tab pop-up.

The browser.newtab.url pref is no longer supported in Firefox 41 and later, so you can no longer use this to set the new tab page.

You can look at this extension to set the new tab page:

You can set the new tab URL setting via the Options/Preferences of the extension on the about:addons page.

You can look at this extension if you use the home page as the new tab page.

Classic Theme Restorer includes this feature as well. In current CTR versions (1.3.9+) you find "New tab page url" in the Tabs (1) section.

You can use these special pages for the new tab page or use the URL of a web page. the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab

  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank
  • for Super Start you can use about:superstart

OK, I tho't things were all fixed up. They were not. I left the computer for a few hours, came back, clicked on "new tab," and the doggone yahoo search was there again, tho' I'd gone to about:config and cleared out the browser.newtab.~~~ et cetera. When it's done something this dastardly, it apparently can't wait for that to appear blank, so it can jump back in there!

So, in further reading, I realized I had to not leave it blank to have a "blank new tab," but had to type in that spot where yahoo took over again: "about:blank."

NOW, we hope that this really did work! We'll find out later, I guess.  ;)

OK, I now see that it says this feature, for both HOME PAGE *AND* NEW TAB is no longer supported.

WHY IS THIS ???

Left the computer for awhile, came here on a short pit stop, found BOTH "new tab" *AND* "home page" changed back to this yahoo search thing!!

Dastardly program that grabbed these, tho' we UNclicked so they were supposedly *NOT* to reset these things!!!

Just hoping your new referral links actually WORK, too! Sad, when Firefox has been decent for years, and now this ... not letting us DUMP what the spam website did, because it's "no longer supported"??? Soooo sad!!

Hoping that BOOKMARKS (have tons of them!) are transferable to another browser if this ends up NOT being able to be fixed!  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'(
