I upgraded to 40.0.0 today. I found a site with an RSS feed that I wanted to follow. I keep my RSS feeds in folders on my Bookmark Toolbar. I tried to load it to the appropriate folder, but it loaded to the toolbar itself. The feed showed new entries. I tried to move it to the proper folder and it stopped listing any RSS entries. I again tried to save the new feed to the proper folder. This time it did not appear on the Bookmark toolbar, but it did not appear in the folder I had said to load it to. I went back to 39.0.3 and it works properly. I am running the LiveClick addon, if that helps. I am posting using 39.0.3. All other extensions are what were in use under 40.0.0

Chosen solution

Can you reload the feed via the right-click context menu?

Did you try to close (quit) and restart Firefox after moving the feed?

That sounds really crazy. Why would a bookmark of any kind stop working if you change its location?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Yes, it's the strangest thing I've ever seen. I really thought I'd have to refresh, but it works fine in 39.

Safe mode doesn't help. Changing the theme to default doesn't work. Any other ideas?

No it would not reload via the right context menu. I not only quit and restarted Firefox, I also quit and restarted my computer, just in case it was a general glitch.

I would do all the fiddling with Bookmarks and places maintenance IF everything didn't work in 39.0.3, but things are FINE in 39. Will fussing with all of this really make a difference if the places are fine in one version but the function doesn't work in 40?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Some more information. I created a new profile and tried it there. I still can't get live bookmarks to post anywhere other than the bookmark toolbar, but I can move them and keep the information but only in safe mode. This really isn't acceptable. I'm keeping 40 as my browser for now, so that I can send any information you need. please let me know what you need to help diagnose the problem.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder in profile folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used
  • JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

I disabled hardware acceleration. updated my OSX I can now save a new live bookmark to the bookmark toolbar and then move it to another folder and it works. Unfortunately I still can't save it anywhere except the toolbar. Also, when I try to save it to another folder, it moves the live bookmark next to it to that folder. I know this the weirdest thing ever. If it didn't work properly in 39. I'd do a refresh. If you tell me to refresh I will
