Still trying to find out how to download Microsoft Essentials, or, if indeed, I need to with Firefox now. If not, what plugins do I need to enable for safety?

I completely uninstalled McAfee today. It always seems to ride along with Adobe Flash Player. Yes, it's an option, but they make like you can't live without it. And it feels spotty and invasive to me. Then I tried to download Microsoft Essentials, which has a good reputation, and which I use on a different computer. But things went seriously awry then. I may have been trying to do too much at once, not sure. But it took three restarts and reboots from the "black page" to get here. And I still can't download MEssentials, so I have to assume Firefox is blocking it. I don't have a problem with that, as long as Firefox is supplying my computer with comparable or better anti-virus and spyware protection. I have Malwarebytes for malware, and it seems to be doing its job, and Firefox has (so far) allowed me to update Malwarebytes.

If indeed Firefox is so tight now that I don't need Microsoft Essentials, is there something in plug-ins or add-ons that I need to activate?

Thanks for the assist, Anne McD

McAfee that comes with Adobe Flash isn't an anti-virus application. And "plugins" won't suffice.

Are you running an anti-virus application or a "security suite"? Like Norton, Comodo, AVG, Avira, Avast, or similar program.

Firefox doesn't block the download of security applications, unless you would try to download one from a "sketchy" source that the SafeBrowsing would catch.

Whatever - you need some sort of anti-virus application - none comes with Firefox.

Helpful but I'm still confounded. "The thing" happened again.
