Hi, I'm in a bit of jam, a familiar story for me when I enter into the computing arena, which I presume the question has covered a good deal of what you need to know about the kind of jam I mean? Needless to say it was right at the end of quite a long, and particularly inspired, preview I wrote and I suppose I accidentally touched the pad and the whole 'form' was gone. So I didn't delete it, or choose any other option and I'm thinking it's got to be somewhere on board, hasn't it? It bugs me that user input can be wiped out so easily and I try to close a few tabs and it's like an air raid's imminent, which isn't a vain attempt to unload my obvious fault it's just a rueful observation, but I was hoping that for once there'll be a solution and it won't just be the usual dismal failure, and waste of time. I can't think of anything else I could add to help you out so I'll leave it there and hope I've given you sufficient information . Thank you in advance, whatever the outcome I 'm grateful for you just doing what you do, on a voluntary basis, and the public service you provide is of great value. All the best to you,

                                                                                    Si Hammer

Chosen solution

Thanks for your time spent replying, Sir, I tried going 'Back' at the time but I now know some new ways to access that function, believe me it's something I have to do regularly so the more ways I know the merrier, and variety is always desirable. During my time fumbling about trying to find a solution I became aware of Lazarus, you having mentioned it as well now ensures that I'll be adding it to all the other apps that I don't really know how to use but maybe it'll prove to be the exception? As for the Backspace tweak, about:config is a dark place I only have unpleasant feelings towards as no good has ever come out of any dealings I've had there, your advice is duly noted and will be considered when I've weighed up the risk assessment that will have to take place before I even consider a return visit. *(as I said, 'not long due')

Well done, by the way, for the fact that your reply was meaningful and didn't make me question if I was reading my, or another person's, possibly from another planet?, email. Your top 10 rating doesn't surprise me and I might look you up next time it all goes wrong which on form is not long due*, I hope you see this as praise and not a threat, if the latter please let me know and you will never hear from me again.

Keep up the good work, and I do mean 'good', with gratitude,

                                           Si Hammer

Many hours have passed since you posted, but three thoughts:

(1) When something suddenly vanishes, try undo

You can use Ctrl+z, which is a pretty much universal shortcut in Windows, or right-click > Undo, or call up the edit menu (Alt+e if you don't display the classic menu bar).

Unfortunately, text vanishing sometimes occurs due to reloading the page or using the back button. In that case, undo can't help.

(2) Beware the Backspace key

If you happen to click outside of the editing area, the Backspace key behaves like the back button. Best, perhaps, to turn off that connection. There is a hidden setting you can change as follows:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste back and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the browser.backspace_action preference and change the value from 0 to 2 (or anything other than 0 or 1) and then click OK.

(FYI - setting it to 1 causes the Backspace key to behave like Page Up)

(3) Consider a form saving add-on

One I've seen recommended before is: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/lazarus-form-recovery/
