can the mozilla firefox start page be customized like the same way the chrome one is as in have pics and stuff instead of standard homepage thx

No - the default home page (about:home) can't be customized, as with some other browsers.
IMO, about:newtab isn't going to give you what your want, without installing an add-on with the features that you want to change. Such as - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/
The easiest way to "fix" that is to set your own choice for "your" home page. See - How to set the home page

I think you want the "New tab" page as start page.
To set it, click on the Menu button at the top right, then "Options". Enter "about:newtab" in the Home page: field. Now close and open again Firefox, you should have a start page with thumbnails.
