Why is the address bar covered or hidden?
My address bar displays only solid-colored bars; I cannot see a URL as I type it. If G=green, Y=gray and B=black, it currently looks like this: GGGGGGGGGG GGGG YYYYYYYYY BBBBBB YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. I would like to be able to erase the former URL and start typing a new one with minimal keystrokes, but can't figure how.
I have a second issue, while we're at it. My Adobe Flash isn't good enough for Firefox, until I "allow" it after the prompt comes up. I cannot figure out how (have tried and failed multiple times) to acquire/download an updated version of Adobe Flash that will satisfy Firefox. How is that done?
Chosen solution
The colors mirror the actual characters being replaced by solid rectangles, so for regular sites the text is gray except for the domain, which is black, and green is used for the name of the company that operates sites that have an Extended Validation SSL certificate. As for WHY, it is a bug with Ubuntu on some systems. If you follow the link to the source post, there is a link to the bug.

On the first issue:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste gfx and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the gfx.xrender.enabled preference to switch it from true to false.
This takes effect after the next time you exit and start up Firefox again.

On the second issue, do you have the latest 11.2.x update? You can check this page: https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
Thank you, jscher. I will be quite happy if your solution fixes my problem. The reason I chose the "didn't fix my problem" (or whatever the words to that effect were) is because I would still like to know WHY. Being an ordinary person in a techno-speak environment is very troubling sometimes. Did I do something to cause my addresses to be covered up? Is there a purpose to covering them up? Does green mean something that gray and black do not mean? I just wish I could know what is going on sometimes. I will get back to you if the solution does not work for me, but I hope it will, and thank you in advance for that.

I don't really know the details of this, but according to this bug report there was a bug in certain versions of Ubuntu when combined with certain graphics cards that caused this. Supposedly, it was fixed in Ubuntu 14.10, though, so you could try updating your version of Ubuntu.
