I think the major free webmail providers -- Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo -- are pretty good as long as you have a strong password and make sure to only log in on their real sites (lots of tricky emails go around trying to steal your login).

Of course, there are other mail providers who tout their security, but unless they have a lot of users, it's difficult to get a lot of feedback.
